Montreal is on par with the world’s best cycling cities.
According to the Copenhagenize Index, a holistic ranking of bicycle-friendly cities around the world, Montreal comes in at number 18 — and is the top city in North America. Just pick up a Greater Montréal Bikeways map and you’ll see why: 3,450 kilometers of paths connect the city, the Sentier cyclable et pédestre Oka-Mont-Saint-Hilaire, and the Route Verte network. The Montreal metro area alone boasts close to 700 kilometers, some of which hug the Lachine Canal, pass by public markets, or cross through hip, vibrant neighborhoods and peaceful parks.
Mountain biking is a bit harder to come by, but the effort is worth it: the cross-country and enduro trails of Mont Sutton, the downhill of Bromont, and the manicured singletrack at Mont Tremblant. Bike fever takes over Montreal every summer during the Go Bike Montréal festival, which features the Tour la Nuit (a popular nighttime ride) and Tour de l'Île. And if you’re a fan of pro cycling, mark your calendar for the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal, when the world’s best race around a thrilling downtown circuit.
