The process
We aimed to make every element of this paint process as eco-friendly as possible, from the paints and pigments down to the type of masking tape.
The semi-transparent frame logo was created in partnership with Living Ink Technologies, who created an Algae Black™ pigment made from algae cultivation waste materials diverted from landfills. The algae-based waste is collected and put through a heat treatment before being formulated into the final product — which replaces traditional petroleum-based black paint pigments.
For the desert-inspired layers, we partnered with EnvironOxide™, an organization that created pigments using excess iron removed from polluted waterways. These minerals are sifted from the water using a series of natural sedimentation treatments. The iron recovered during this process is dried using wind and sunlight and repurposed to be used in a variety of products, including paints.
The Raw Lithos frame also features water-based decals which reduce VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions up to 85% compared to traditional solvent-based products. Plus, our painters traded single-use masking tape for a reusable solution to create those natural-looking transitions between each earthy color.
