All you need to know about Women’s MTBs

More and more women are hitting the trail and discovering the fun and freedom of the open road, and many of us are left wondering – do I need a women’s-specific mountain bike? Here, we’ll discuss what makes women’s mountain bikes different (it may be less than you think), and highlight some of the women leading the way down the rowdy trails ahead.

In the past, Trek’s Women’s Specific Design gave women who ride a better chance at finding a bike that would fit right from the start. Now, the design elements we first created for women’s-specific mountain bikes, like lower standover height, smaller sizes and size-specific geometry, are used on bikes for all genders – because these features benefit all riders.

Instead of having a select few models exclusively for women, we’ve expanded our size and colour choices for all our mountain bikes. Which means that all genders have more options than ever.

As we’ve learnt more about the needs of all riders, we’ve found that touchpoints like saddles are less about a rider’s gender and more about their individual anatomy. For this reason, we’ve shifted away from men’s- and women’s-specific saddles, opting instead for size-specific saddles, with different widths and lengths to accommodate riders with different bone structures.

Casey Brown – Trek C3 Project

Casey, child of the woods and godmother of freeride, grew up in rural New Zealand and came of age in British Columbia. When she’s not breaking barriers on massive jumps and leading the way into the first-ever Women’s Red Bull Rampage, she’s creating more opportunities for women in the sport at her all-women’s freeride event – Dark Horse.
